The first specimen was lot 22971 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Centavos, 1915-Mo. NGC MS-66 RB. "Zapata" issue. Tied with one other example for finest certified at NGC or PCGS. Needle sharp strike with attractive glossy red-brown surfaces." This specimen is an example of a type struck 1915 at Mexico City while the mint was occupied by the Zapatistas. There doesn't seem any justification for the change in size other than to advertise the rebels' control of the mint. Similar small size one centavos were also emitted and promptly demonetized as soon as the Carrancistas resumed control. In 1905, the coinage was overhauled and all new types were introduced, including new one, five, ten, twenty and fifty centavos. This was the first two centavos issue since the failed copper-nickel experiment of 1882-83. However, after its production ended in 1941, mint authorities did not see fit to introduce a replacement and none of the denomination have been struck since.

Recorded mintage: 487,000.

Specification: 3 g, bronze, 25 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM-420.
