Taxco 1915 peso KM-674
This specimen was lot 11448 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,116. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Revolution Guerrero-Taxco. Peso, 1915. Very scarce. Slightly weak strike. With Mr. Wood's hand-lettered cardboard holder. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED. Ex: Howland Wood Collection." This coin was issued by the Zapatistas under conditions where they were unable to part the gold from the silver, so they simply minted the alloy they had. The legend "ORO 0.300" does not mean 30% gold but 0.30 grams of gold. The coin was small enough to avoid melting, unlike other Guerrero issues. See also the similar KM 672.
