Amecameca (1915) 10 centavos
This specimen was lot 73467 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $380. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Estado de Mexico - Amecameca. Brass 10 Centavos, ND (1915). PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. A nice example of the type with a deeply impressed denomination and rustic brassy surfaces. Some greenish encrustation accounts for the designation but is far from distracting." The Amecameca coinage, issued by the Zapatistas, is the crudest of the Revolution. It ranges from brass five centavos up to fifty centavos. As might be expected from hand stamped coinage, no two are alike. Some were struck in brass (shown here) and others in copper (KM 681a). The twenty and twenty-five centavos are the most available.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 15 g, brass, 24.5-24.8 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-681; GB-247.
