Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73472
SB1024-73472r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73472 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guerrero. Taxco. Peso, 1915. NGC AU-55. Variety without star before "G" and with star before "UN PESO". Amongst the RAREST of all Revolutionary Pesos, this example, sans the star before "G", delivers good details with a bold strike and limited signs of actual circulation. Underlying glossiness is well preserved, with much appeal throughout. A stunning example for the specialist in Revolutionary coinage." This coin was issued by the Zapatistas under conditions where they were unable to part the gold from the silver, so they simply minted the alloy they had. The legend "ORO 0.300" does not mean 30% gold but 0.30 grams of gold. The coin was small enough to avoid melting, unlike other Guerrero issues. See also the similar KM 672.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.6 g, silver mixed with gold, 30 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-673; GB-234.
