This specimen was lot 11447 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $27,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Revolution. Guerrero, Suriana. 2 Pesos, 1915. NGC AU-58. EXTREMELY RARE. Reeded edge. A classic rarity of the Revolutionary Period. Toned." This coin was issued by the Zapatistas under conditions where they were unable to part the gold from the silver, so they simply minted the alloy they had. Most were promptly melted down as the gold content made them worth more than face value.
Recorded mintage: unknown but very rare.
Specification: 22.93 g, silver and gold.
Catalog reference: KM-665; GB-223.
