SB626-72096b.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 72096 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), which sold for $195.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Duo of 1/2 Reales (2 Pieces), 1845 & 1853. Durango Mint. Average Grade: VERY GOOD. 1) 1845/1-Do RM. 2) 1853-Do CP. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. This specimen was struck at the Durango mint in 1845, one of a type struck there 1832-34, 1837, 1841-64 and 1869. While Durango produced substantial numbers of eight reales and gold, silver minors are scarce and no four reales exist. Assayer RM (Ramon Mascarenas) is listed for 1830-48. Several overdates, 1845/31, 1845/34 and 1845/35, are noted; the 1845/31 is depicted here.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.903 fine silver, .049 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-370.3.
