Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 73007

This specimen was lot 73007 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $915. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1845-Ca RG. Chihuahua Mint. NGC G-6. Soho dies. Very rare date. Only example graded by NGC. Redesigned local dies. Attractive with claims to a higher grade. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. The Chihuahua mint was opened in 1811 by the royalists during the War of Independence and operated until 1822. It seems to have closed until 1831, when it resumed striking eight reales of republican design. Two reales are noted for 1832-36, 1845 and 1855. The SCWC does not give them a high catalog value but all are scarce to rare. The mint was closed in 1895. Assayer RG is noted for 1839-57.
