Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73182
SB224-73182r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73182 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1845-Ga MC. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS Genuine--Mount Removed, EF Details. This coin's previous mounting is attested by surface damage right over the liberty cap as well as some contact marks on the reverse. Nevertheless, the piece remains a satisfying example of this RARE date due to its rather clear details and pleasing gray tone overall." Altho the Guadalajara mint was opened in the early days of the War of Independence, the early dates of the cap-and-ray eight reales are all rare. The first affordable date is 1832 and the first common date is 1859. Assayer MC operated 1839-45. This is a scarce date; the 1845-JG is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.6; DP-Ga26.
