Mexico 1833/2-Mo MJ real
The first specimen was lot 72205 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1833/2-Mo MJ. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-65+ Gold Shield. Pop: 1, none graded finer by PCGS. A boldly struck Real with satiny luster and lovely original surfaces. The toning is a medium gray with hints of color throughout, yielding a coin with great eye appeal, guaranteed to see strong bidding interest." The second specimen was lot 45394 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1833/2-Mo MJ. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-66. Pop: 1, none graded finer by NGC. A very attractive and fully lustrous Real with flashy luster, good design detail, and speckled dark gray toning." The third specimen was lot 70990 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[3] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1833/2-Mo MJ. Mexico City Mint. PCGS AU-58. This example is only limitedly circulated and impressive, with good details and soft brilliance." This specimen was struck at the Mexico City mint in 1832. This mint has operated since 1535, with one reals known for 1825-33 and 1850-63. Assayer MJ is recorded for 1833 only. This year is only known with the overdate. The issues of Mexico City, along with Zacatecas and Guanajuato, are generally common.
