GB 1998 50 pence rev DSLR.jpg

In the decimal conversion, the fifty pence replaced the ten shilling note or gold half sovereign. Inflation, of course, meant that the half sovereign had long ceased to circulate. Collector proofs exist in silver, gold and platinum. The fifty pence was struck with this design 1998-2009. Commemorative fifty pence honoring the EU (KM 992) and the United Nations (KM 996) were struck in 1998.

Recorded mintage: 64,306,500 plus 63,670 proofs.

Specification: 8 g, copper-nickel, 27.3 mm diameter, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.

Catalog reference: KM 991.
