Great Britain 1997 5 pence

This five new pence, or 1/20 of a pound, was introduced in 1968 as part of the Great Britain decimal reform. It was equal to the shilling in the sterling coinage. The weight was reduced to 3.25 g in 1990 and struck in this style until 1997. A few were struck in sterling silver in 1990 for collectors (KM 937c).

Recorded mintage: 236,596,000 plus 80,748 proofs.

Specification: 3.25 g, copper-nickel, 18 mm diameter, designed by Raphael David Maklouf and Christopher Ironside.
