This specimen was lot 21323 in Heritage sale 3002 (Long Beach, September 2008), where it sold for $1,207.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Elizabeth II gold 100 Pounds 1997, MS68 NGC. Reverse Britannia in a chariot." Following up on the marketing success of the Mexican libertad, the Canadian maple leaf and the American gold and silver eagles, the Royal mint entered the fray in 1987 with a series of gold bullion coins. These were issued in 1/10 oz (10 pounds), 1/4 oz (25 pounds), 1/2 oz (50 pounds) and 1 oz (100 pounds). Altho struck fairly steadily since, the low mintages suggests that they were not a marketing success. The Royal Mint also introduced a silver series in 1997.

Recorded mintage: 164 proofs plus an unknown number of uncirculated strikes.

Specification: 34.25 g, .9167 fine gold, 1.000 troy oz AGW.
