This specimen was lot 24431 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,173.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Elizabeth II gold £5 1999, Princess Diana commemorative, PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC, a splendid example featuring the dual portraits of majesty: Elizabeth II's older image by Ian Rank-Broadley (which first appeared in 1998), and David Cornell's image of the tragic princess. Only 7500 were issued in gold in proof. The 2013 SCBC value is given as £1,650 (about US$2,600)." Other gold five pounds for 1999 included the traditional St. George and the dragon (KM 1003) and a commemorative honoring the Greenwich meridian (KM 1006).
Recorded mintage: 5,000,000 for circulation, 100,000 in proof, 49,545 in silver and 7,500 in gold (shown here).
Specification: copper-nickel, 38.61 mm diameter. The gold issue was 39.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.177 oz AGW.
