Ponterio sale 182, lot 1125

This specimen was lot 1125 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 50 Pence, 1998. NGC PROOF-69 ULTRA CAMEO. National health service. Mintage of only 1,500 pieces." This writer's edition of the SCWC does not mention the gold proofs but they indubitably exist. The Ponterio catalog erred; this issue is for the 25th anniversary of Britain's joining the European Common Market. They are valued about the same.

Recorded mintage: 5,043,000 in copper-nickel plus 100,000 copper-nickel proofs plus 8,859 silver proofs plus 1,500 gold proofs.

Specification: 8 g, copper-nickel, 27.3 mm diameter (regular issue).
