Sincona sale 46, lot 344

This specimen was lot 344 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,200 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 1/2 Louis dor à lécu 1690 D, Lyon. Réformation. Gutes sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half louis d'or of the shield of 1690, Lyon mint, reformed. Good very fine, Small scratches.)"

The demi-louis d'or is much scarcer than its larger brother, tho this type, the demi-louis d'or à l'écu, turns up occasionally. It was issued 1690-1693.

Reported Mintage: 41,600 on new blanks plus 38,016 "reformed", fairly common for the type.

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20-21 mm diameter; this specimen 3.34 g.
