Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1280

This specimen was lot 1280 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €870 (about US$1,153 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV demi-louis d'or à l'écu, 1690I, Limoges. 1e réformation. D/ T. vieillie à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Rare Légère double frappe au droit. Très Beau/Superbe. Provient de notre vente 90, 9 décembre 2006, 1160. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold half louis of the shield of 1690, Limoges mint, first reformation. Obverse: peruked and laureate old head right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Rare, lightly double struck on the obverse. Very Fine/Extremely Fine.)"

The demi-louis d'or is much scarcer than its larger brother, tho this type, the demi-louis d'or a l'écu, turns up occasionally. This type was struck 1690-93. The doubling mentioned in the auction description could be a side effect of the overstrike.

Recorded mintage: 12,561, all rf.

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 20-21 mm diameter, this specimen 3,34 g.
