from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 774

This specimen was lot 774 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,520 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV demi-louis d'or à l'écu, 1690X, Amiens. 1e réformation. D/ T. vieillie à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Rare Fines griffes. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), gold half louis d'or of the shield of 1690, Amiens mint, first reformation. Obverse: Old head to right, wearing wig and laurel wreath; reverse: crowned arms of France. Rare, fine scratches, Very Fine.)"

The demi-louis d'or is much scarcer than its larger sister, tho this type, the demi-louis d'or a l'écu, turns up occasionally. It was issued 1690-1693. While edge reeding was introduced to the French mints about 1687, this is the first series to use it on a routine basis.

Recorded mintage: unknown (all restruck over earlier types). Droulers lists this date as "reported, not confirmed."

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 3,30 g.

Catalog reference: KM 277.14 (unlited date), Dr/4 № 418, Dr/2 № 262, Dupl-1436A; Gad-239.
