H61259-99052r.jpg

This specimen was lot 99052 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV Ecu 1690-N XF45 NGC, Montpellier mint. Ecu aux 8L. Flan Reforme, star on reverse. A pleasing mid-grade example capped by moderate evidence of handling, showcasing pearl-gray highpoints against an even pewter patina. Accompanied by original lot tag. Ex. Stack's Bowers Baltimore Auction (November 2011, Lot 23201)." This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--most specimens have a visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux palmes. Droulers[2] prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced two and a half times that of an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 67,934 fn plus 590,103 rf[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
