This specimen was lot 22253 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $305.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1690-D. Louis XIV (1643-1715). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details Secure Holder. Cleaned long ago now attractively toned." The specimen shown is an écu aux 8 L struck in Lyon during the reign of Louis XIV of France. This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux palmes. Droulers[1] prices this date about 25% higher than common, but even a common date is priced two and a half times that of an écu à la mèche longue.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dav-3811, KM-275.3; Gad-216, Dr/4 № 508, Dr/2 № 396.
