Jean Elsen list 269, lot 898
France JElsen 269-898r.jpg

This specimen was lot 898 in Jean Elsen list 269 (Brussels, July-August 2014), where it was offered for €1,000 (about US$1,361). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 1690 P, Dijon. 1er type. Avec LUD· dans la légende. 1e réformation. Droit: B. drapé à droite. Revers: Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnés de quatre lis. Superbe (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver half écu of eight 'L's' of 1690, Dijon mint, first type, with "LUD" in the legend, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust to right; reverse: cross formed of eight 'L's', four fleur-de-lys in the fields. Extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older half écus ("flans reformés"--most specimens have a visible undertype). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes. Droulers[1] prices this date about 25% higher than common, but even a common date is priced two and a half times that of an demi-écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 13,049 new plus 85,893 "flans reformés" (common date).

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 13,31 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl., 1515A; Ci., 1890; Gad-184, Dr/4 № 616.
