Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1535

This specimen was lot 1535 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €320 (about US$468 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux huit L, 1690E, Tours. 1er type. 1e réformation. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of the eight L's of 1690, Tours mint, first type, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned L's, cantonned with four lilies. Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--most specimens have a visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux palmes. The écu would be struck in various forms until the end of the ancien régime in 1792.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce on new blanks and slightly scarce on reformed blanks.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver; this specimen 26,70 g.
