Künker Auction 439, lot 2060

This specimen was lot 2060 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$10,318 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Double louis d'or à l'écu 1690 B, Rouen. Réformation. Kopf r. mit Lorbeerkranz//Gekröntes Wappen, oben Münzstättensignatur B, darunter Halbmond (unbekannter Münzmeister). GOLD. RR Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Goldtönung, vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, double louis d'or of the shield of 1690, Rouen mint, reformed. Obverse: laureate head; reverse: crowned arms with mintmark, crescent moon below. Very rare, very attractive example with handsome gold toning, extremely fine.)"

This double louis d'or à l'écu was the first double Louis to be struck since the double louis d'or à la mèche longue issued in the 1650's. This date is better for the type but the type as a whole is scarce to rare. While edge reeding was introduced to the French mints about 1687, this is the first series to use it on a routine basis.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf, a better date of a rare type[2].

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-30 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 13,43 g.
