Sincona sale 63, lot 787

This specimen was lot 787 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$313 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Frankreich, konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Ecu aux huit L 1690 B, Rouen. Flan neuf. Mzz. Halbmond. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the eight L's of 1690, Rouen mint, new blank, privy mark Crescent. Rare, Good very fine.)" Droulers[2] prices this date about 10% higher than common, but even a common date is priced two and a half times that of an écu à la mèche longue. The specimens struck on "flans neufs" are scarce.

Recorded mintage: 117,023 "flans neufs" plus unknown "flans reformés"[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 27.22 g.
