Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55499

This specimen was lot 55499 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen, 1704. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. About Uncirculated Details -- Cleaned. No inner circle on obverse, legend variation. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Four different gulden were struck in 1704 for Rudolph August and Anton Ulrich: KM 559, shown here, struck 1685-1704, common; and KM 615, with a leaping stallion reverse, struck 1694-1705, scarce; KM 655 1704 only; and KM 656 (wild man) struck 1704-05. The two brothers ruled together until Rudolph's death in 1704, whereupon Anton Ulrich ruled alone.
