Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1704-HCH 2 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 5513 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €190 (about US$265 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Rudolf August und Anton Ulrich, 1685-1704. 2 Mariengroschen 1704, Braunschweig, auf den Tod von Rudolf August am 26. Januar. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Rudolf August and Anton Ulrich, 1685-1704, two mariengroschen of 1704, Brunswick mint, on the death of Rudolf August on January 26. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
On the death of the duke in 1704, an extensive series of commemoratives was struck, ranging from a two pfennig to a ducat. Another two mariengroschen exists (KM 649) with the wild man of the forest.
