Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73230

This specimen was lot 73230 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1666-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS AU-53. Some minor wear and striking weakness is noted, but this wholesome crown nevertheless remains without issue and sports a charming gunmetal gray-amber tone. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1666-74 for Rudolf August and is somewhat scarce. "Wild man" thalers were also struck for his predecessor, August II, in 1666. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel is famous for its long series of wild man thalers.
