Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1666-HS 2 thaler Dav-LS87
This specimen was lot 4055 in Goldberg sale 80 (Los Angeles, June 2014), where it sold for $7,312.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. 2 Taler, 1666-HS. August II, 1634-1666. On his 88th Birthday. Obverse: Facing bust with angels at the sides holding a wreath and a trumpet. Reverse: Circle of shields with horse over helmet in center. 2 stamped at bottom. Very attractive example with original mint luster beneath original old toning. Rare in top grades. NGC graded MS-62." Like most double thalers, this one year type is rare. On this occasion, one, three, four, five and six thaler pieces were also issued.
