Künker sale 400, lot 15

This specimen was lot 15 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €40,000 (about US$51,892 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBUTTEL, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Löser zu 6 Reichstalern 1666, Zellerfeld, auf seinen Tod. Mit Wertpunze; Münzmeister Henning Schlüter. 11 Zeilen Schrift//Verdorrter Baum, auf den Wurzeln liegt ein Totenkopf, l. im Feld die eingepunzte Wertzahl. Von größter Seltenheit. Feine Patina, winz. Kratzer und Randfehler, vorzügliches Exemplar, Exemplar der Slg. Wilhelm Bonin, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 312, Frankfurt/Main 1984, Nr. 2379 und der Preussag Collection, Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 92. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, August the Younger, 1635-66, six thaler of 1666, Zellerfeld mint, on his death, with value punched in. Obverse: eleven line inscription; reverse: withered tree, a skull at its roots, value punched into the left field. Extremely rare, fine patina, light scratches and edge nicks, extremely fine example.)"

In 1666, the duke issued a long series of commemoratives celebrating his 88th birthday. Later that year, he died, and another series of commemoratives marked that as well. The birthday issues were popular enough that they were restruck several times. The reverse motto, "OMNIA NON NISI PROVIDO ET VEGETO CONSILIO", translates as, "Nothing is provided except by planning."
