Künker sale 400, lot 14

This specimen was lot 14 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,114 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBUTTEL, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Löser zu 1 1/2 Reichstalern 1666, Zellerfeld, auf seinen 88. Geburtstag. Mit Wertpunze; Münzmeister Henning Schlüter. Brustbild fast v. v. mit Käppchen, oben l. Engel, der einen Lorbeerkranz über sein Haupt hält, r. ein weiterer Engel mit Posaune, umher Lorbeerkranz//Braunschweiger Helm, umher Schriftkreis, umgeben von 14 kleinen gekrönten Wappen auf Rankenornamenten, unten die eingepunzte Wertzahl. Der Flügel des rechten Engels ragt vollständig in die Umschrift, die Mitte der Braunschweiger Helmzier zeigt auf das "T". Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Tönung, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Möller 60, Kassel 2012, Nr. 1191. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, August the Younger, 1635-66, 1½ thaler of 1666, Zellerfeld mint, on his 88th birthday, with value punched in. Obverse: Half-length capped portrait almost facing, an angel holding a laurel wreath over his head, right, another angel with a trumpet, around a laurel wreath; reverse: Braunschweig helmet, motto around, surrounded by 14 small crowned coats of arms on vine ornaments, below, the stamped value. The wing of the right angel projects completely into the inscription, the middle of the Braunschweig helmet ornament points to the "T". Very attractive example with fine toning, extremely fine.)"

In 1666, the duke issued a long series of commemoratives celebrating his 88th birthday. Later that year, he died, and another series of commemoratives marked that as well. The birthday issues were popular enough that they were restruck several times. For the 1½ thaler, the restrikes are dated 1666-IPE (KM 479.2).
