Sincona sale 66, lot 1143

This specimen was lot 1143 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$4,213 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum. Rudolf August, 1666-1685. Löser zu 1 1/2 Taler 1683, Zellerfeld. Münzmeister Rudolf Bornemann. Mit eingepunzter Wertzahl. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Rudolf Augustus, 1666-85, 1½ thaler of 1683, Zellerfeld mint, with the denomination punched in. Extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"

The dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel emitted a wider variety of multiple thalers than any other state in the seventeenth century. Like most 1½ thalers, this one year type is rare. It is accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-LS107).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 43 g, silver, this specimen 43.38 g.

Catalog reference: KM 530.2, Welter 1828. Duve 3. Dav-LS108.
