Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1683 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73484 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1683. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS AU-53. This coin exhibits somewhat uneven surface color in shades of deep bluish gray on the obverse and a pleasing uniform argent on the reverse. The Wild Man is well-detailed and the coin is well-struck with no weak areas noted. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This issue of 1677-85 was the third 24 mariengroschen for this state. Equal to two-thirds thaler, it was struck steadily until 1834. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The wild man is the most common design but a few were issued with the leaping stallion reverse (KM 586, 615, 868, 895, 1012, 1033).
