Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1666-HS thaler Dav-6355
This specimen was lot 52216 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. "Fama" Taler, 1666-HS. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint. August "the Younger". NGC AU-55. So-called on account of the depiction of "Fama" (Rumor) above the Duke's bust, trumpeting to all around her, this impressive, broad specimen stands with hardly any degree of handling, with a great deal of darker toning--especially as one approaches the edges. A resounding survivor, and one that is unsurprisingly about as alluring as one can hope to encounter." This type was struck 1665-66 and is scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
