This specimen was lot 23996 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. August II Taler 1662-HS, MS61 NGC, a choice coin with attractive old-time patina and well-struck features, particularly on the face of the Wildman." This type was struck 1653-65 in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and is among the more common thalers of the period. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. Duke August II ruled 1634-66.
