Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1661-HS thaler Dav-6343
This specimen was lot 73476 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1661-HS. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: HS and crossed keys. August "the Younger". PCGS Genuine--Tooled, EF Details. An attractive example of the type, with design elements and lettering in shades of argent and fawn against a backdrop of charcoal gray. The noted tooling appears as light scratches in the field which toning has served to camouflage. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This specimen seems to be a product of the Zellerfeld mint which was operated by mintmaster Henning Schluter. This type was struck 1655-65 and is fairly common. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel is famous for its long series of wild man thalers.
