This specimen was lot 33669 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $7,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. August II Taler 1660-HS MS64 NGC. An inspiring example ringed in bright, colorful iridescence that shimmers alluringly at the peripheries upon rotation in hand. Better struck than most, and certainly significantly finer, this example is currently the sole representative of its type certified by NGC." This type was struck 1655-65 in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and is among the more common thalers of the period. This specimen seems to be a product of the Goslar mint; HS are the initials of mintmaster Henning Schlueter. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. Duke August II ruled 1634-66.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
