Kunker sale 293, lot 522

This specimen was lot 522 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €120 (about US$162 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. 1/4 Reichstaler 1660, Zellerfeld. RR Henkelspur, sehr schön. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, quarter thaler of 1660, Zellerfeld mint. Rare, mount mark, very fine.)"

Two quarter thalers exist for 1660: where the wild man holds his tree horizontally (KM 461, struck 1659-60, 1665) or where he holds his tree vertically (KM 465, struck 1660-64, shown here).

Recorded mintage: unknown.
