Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73480
SB1123-73480r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73480 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 1/8 Taler, 1659-HS. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint. August "the Younger". PCGS EF-40. Variety in which the crown breaks the top perimeter legend on the reverse. Offering a range of hues from argent to darker grays to charcoal gray in some protected areas of the obverse, lighter tones, gold, and russet are seen on the reverse. Some reverse shadowing weakness due to the Wild Man figure on the obverse. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This specimen seems to be a product of the Zellerfeld mint which was operated by mintmaster Henning Schluter. The wild man design appeared on many different thalers from this state. Fractions, including this one-eighth thaler, are much scarcer. This type is listed for 1659 and 1664. A "houseboy" reverse (KM 460) is also listed for 1659.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: cf. KM-459; cf. Welter-844.
