The first specimen was lot 518 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €260 (about US$351 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. 1/2 Reichstaler 1656, Zellerfeld. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, half thaler of 1656, Zellerfeld mint. Weakly struck, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 73227 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 1/2 Taler, 1656. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crossed keys and HS. August 'the Younger'. PCGS AU-53. An area of striking weakness is observed on the obverse and reverse, but this lightly circulated minor otherwise provides ample originality along with an enticing tone with varying color. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Two varieties of half thalers exist for 1656: this one (KM 391, struck 1636-39, 1653-56) with the obverse legend starting at top right, and KM 454, with the obverse legend starting at bottom left. Altho half thalers are known from this state as late as 1776, their issue became intermittent after the series of "bell" half thalers in 1643.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 391, Welter 833.
