Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1655-HS 1/4 thaler
This specimen was lot 74615 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 1/4 Taler, 1655. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crossed keys and HS. August "the Younger". PCGS EF-40. An interesting representative of the type, this gunmetal gray minor presents a flipover double strike, with the bottom portions of the coat-of-arms clearly evident within the pectoral area and midsection of the wildman, tattooing his upper body in Germanic heraldry. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1637-42 and 1654-55 and is more available than the later KM 465. A one-eighth thaler (KM 394) and half thaler (KM 391) also exist.
