Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1664-HS 1/8 thaler
This specimen was lot 74618 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 1/8 Taler, 1664-HS. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint. August "the Younger". PCGS MS-63. A VERY RARE and elegant type, this Choice specimen dazzles with a fairly strong strike, enchanting gunmetal gray toning, and some alluring glints of brilliance emanating from the protected areas. Resoundingly attractive, and an example that would serve as a tremendous representative for minor in this popular series. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Kuenker 266 (9/2015) Lot # 1118." This type was struck 1659 and 1664 and is very scarce, verging on rare. The accompanying quarter thaler (KM 465) is also scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: cf. KM-459; cf. Welter-844.
