Künker Auction 426, lot 3563

The first specimen was lot 72187 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. "Houseboy" Taler, 1664. Zellerfeld Mint. August "the Younger". PCGS AU-50. A pleasing and handsome example, this specimen delivers rich retained details and wholesome eye appeal. The softly glossy surfaces are complimented by some gray color, making certain this example is much demanded." The second specimen was lot 3563 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €290 (about US$411 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Reichstaler 1664, Zellerfeld. Hausknechtstaler. Feine Tönung, Feld der Vorderseite leicht berieben, sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, "houseboy" thaler of 1664, Zellerfeld mint. Fine toning, tooling in the obverse fields, very fine or better.)"

The "houseboy" thaler acquired its nickname because the wild man appears to be dusting his forest with a broom. This type was struck 1664-66 and is somewhat scarce. It is distinguished from the very similar Dav-6341 by having August's name on the left instead of the right of the shield. Other thalers for 1664 include KM 442.1, KM 444.1, KM 444.2, KM 456 and KM 470. Duke August II ruled 1634-66.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29 g, 0.875 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, the second specimen 28,59 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-6342; KM-442.2.
