Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1663-HS 1/4 thaler
This specimen was lot 74617 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 1/4 Taler, 1663-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. August "the Younger". PCGS EF-45. Featuring a fairly muscular wildman with some even handling across the higher points, this enticing example sports a deep gray tone with some cobalt and amber speckled throughout. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1660 and 1663-64 and is very scarce, verging on rare. This example realized only half the catalog value. The accompanying one-eighth thaler (KM 459) is even harder to find.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: KM-465; Welter-839.
