Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1663-HS thaler Dav-6343
This specimen was lot 3562 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €300 (about US$425 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Reichstaler 1663, Zellerfeld. Winz. Schrötlingsriß am Rand, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, thaler of 1663, Zellerfeld mint. Small edge crack, very fine.)"
This type was struck 1653-65 in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and is among the more common thalers of the period. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors.
