Aureo sale 261, lot 222

This specimen was lot 222 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €130 (about US$209 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1616. Alberto e Isabel. Amberes. 1 patagón. Precioso color. MBC. (Albert and Isabel, viceroys for Philip III, duchy of Brabant, patagon of 1616, Antwerp mint. Nice color, very fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp and Brussels mints 1612-21. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4435), Luxembourg and Tournai (Dav-4438). The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce. This is a common date for the type.

Specification: 28.1 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Vti. 348, Dav-4432, KM 35.1 (Antwerp).
