Jean Elsen sale 125, lot 1328

This specimen was lot 1328 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Albrecht en Isabella (1598-1621), AR patagon, z.j. (1612-1621), Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond Bourgondisch kruis. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Mooie patina Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Albert and Isabella (1598-1621), silver patagon without date, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned Burgundian cross; reverse: crowned arms, Order oft he Golden Fleece around. Nice patina, very fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Bruges mint 1612-21. A very similar coin was struck for Brabant (Dav-4432), Luxembourg and Tournai (Dav-4438). The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.1 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 27,23 g.
