Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 619

This specimen was lot 619 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €240 (about US$312 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR escalin au paon, s.d. (1612-1621), Bruxelles. D/ Paon faisant la roue, les ailes éployées, avec l'écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne sur la poitrine. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Nettoyé. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, undated escalin of the peacock, Brussels mint. Obverse: a peacock displaying supports the arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Cleaned, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck at Bois-le-Duc (1617 only), Brussels (shown here, 1618-21 and ND) and Antwerp (1620-21 and ND). It is described in the SCWC as having an eagle on the obverse but peacock is clearly the correct bird. The later type of 1621-57 (KM 52, lion with sword on the obverse) is much more common.
