Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 1046

This specimen was lot 1046 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €380 (about US$475 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), Cu liard (oord), 1613, Maastricht. D/ Ecu couronné entre deux étoiles. R/ Croix de Bourgogne avec l'écu de Maastricht, sous une couronne, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Rare dans cette qualité. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, copper liard or oord of 1613, Maastricht mint. Obverse: crowned arms between two stars; reverse: Burgundian cross with the arms of Maastricht under a crown, decorated with the Order of the Golden Fleece. Rare in this quality, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck at Maastricht 1603-15, Antwerp 1608-17 and s'Hertogenbosch 1607 and 1609. Common in low grade, these crudely struck coppers are very scarce in choice condition. The city of Maastricht, on the banks of the Meuse or Maas river, is actually not in Brabant but in the duchy of Limburg. However, the obverse legend "BVR·B·Z" indicates that the coinage was intended to circulate in Brabant.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen is 3,36 g.
