Chateau-Renaud 1625 escalin
This specimen was lot 718 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,356 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, CHÂTEAU-RENAUD, Principauté, Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine (1614-1629), AR escalin au paon, 1625. Imitation de l'escalin d'Albert et Isabelle. D/ Paon faisant la roue, les ailes éployées, avec un écu parti sur la poitrine. R/ Écu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Extrêmement rare. (France, principality of Chateau-Renaud, Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine, 1614-29, silver escalin of the peacock of 1625, struck in imitation of the escalins of Albert and Isabella. Obverse: a peacock displayed with arms on its breast; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Extremely rare, about Very Fine.)"
Numista lists this type as undated. It is scarce, verging on rare. Chateau-Renaud was an estate of the house of Conde, one of the leaders of the Catholic League during the Wars of Religion, until the last heiress, Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine, ceded it to Louis XIII in 1629.
