Chateau-Renaud (1625-29) 4 patards
This specimen was lot 1499 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €260 (about US$382 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, CHATEAU-RENAUD, Principauté, Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine (1614-1629), AR 4 patards, s.d. (1625-1629). Imitation des Schillings d'Oldenburg. D/ MO NOVA- [ARG]- ORDINE- S·[P·Q·]R Ecu couronné, posé sur une croix de bâtons noueux. R/ NISI TV DOM[INE] NOBISCVM [EPVS] Aigle impériale couronnée. Très rare Légère faiblesse de frappe. Très Beau. (France, principality of Chateau-Renaud, Louise Marguerite of Lorraine, 1614-29, undated silver four patards, imitition of an Oldenburg schilling. Obverse: crowned arms over a cross of batons; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Very rare, slightly weak strike, very fine.)"
Chateau-Renaud was an estate of the house of Conde, one of the leaders of the Catholic League during the Wars of Religion, until the last heiress, Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine, ceded it to Louis XIII in 1629.
