Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 930
Sincona sale 63, lot 115

The first specimen was lot 930 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €140 (about US$183 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR escalin au paon, 1617, Bois-le-Duc. D/ Paon faisant la roue, les ailes éployées, avec l'écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne sur la poitrine. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Rare. Beau à Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, escalin of the peacock of 1617, Bois-le-Duc mint. Obverse: peacock dislaying its feathers, supporting the arms of Austria-Burgundy on his breast; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 115 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$376 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BELGIUM | Brabant, Herzogtum, Albert und Isabella, 1598-1621. Escalin 1617, 's-Hertogenbosch. Vorzüglich. Übliche Prägeschwäche. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, escalin of 1617, 's-Hertogenbosch mint. Extremely fine, With the usual weak strike.)"

This type was struck at Bois-le-Duc (shown here, 1617 only), Brussels (1618-21 and ND) and Antwerp (1620-21 and ND). It is described in the SCWC as having an eagle on the obverse but peacock is clearly the correct bird. The later type of 1621-57 (KM 52, lion with sword on the obverse) is much more common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 5.26 g, .582 fine silver, the first specimen 4,55 g, the second specimen 4.93 g.

Catalog reference: KM 47.3, G.H. 314-4; W. 985; Vanhoudt 623.
